Ok, who knows about Kindles?
I can get a Kindle with Wi Fi for $139 and I can get a Kindle 3G Wi Fi for $189.
Is the 3G worth the extra $50 and why? (I'm not a real technology/electronics person in case I have asked an elementary question)
I can get the case and light for the extra $50 so I'm battling whether the 3G makes a $50 difference.
Anybody out there that can help me?

3G is basically your connection speed, like on a cell phone, if you have a strong 3G network in your area, then it would speed things up downloading, if you don't, then it won't make a difference unless there are other differences in that model other than the 3G feature (larger hard drive, etc.)

I'm saying it depends on your service, in my area, 3G service is spotty at best, so it wouldn't be much of a benefit at all.
If you have solid 3G service in your area, and will be using that to download your books, then you might like the increase in speed.

Free Kindle apps
Have you looked at the free downloads for Kindle apps on the Amazon website? I downloaded the app to my PC laptop and it works great if you just want to read. You can also download to your phone and others.

Too new, really, to tell much about the service. So far I have downloaded a few of the free books. The download is really fast and the books are saved to the computer harddrive in a folder which the program created on the desktop as 'Merries Kindle for PC'.
When I click that icon I can see all the books that I have ordered and can choose which one I want to read. Each Kindle book that I downloaded has sent an email message to let me know that I purchased a new book. I thought at first it was charging me, which it would if I was paying for a book.
I like the toolbars they have for reading the book, you can bookmark or tab to the next unread page and so forth.
I've used Amazon before for hard copy book purchases and have been very satisfied so far.
I am considering buying a small netbook to use instead of buying the Kindle, just because of the greater versatility.

Remember the service you are getting through your computer's internet connection will be different than downloading through a cellular 3G connection, if you are downloading all your books through a computer connection, then definitely drop the 3G.

the cellular connection is slow at best, but it is only really made for downloading books that you buy; and they are tiny.
If you have wireless at home, and you only plan on downloading books at home or at coffee shops etc, then the extra $50 isn't worth spending - UNLESS you know that you will "need" it to download books while away from the wireless internet connection.
My wife has the 2nd model and if the wireless were available, I would have gotten that one. why? because she never downloads books anywhere but sitting at home. the logic is that when she is elsewhere, she already has in mind the book or books she wants to read and has them ready to go for the trip or the other location, so that she doesn't have to worry about messing with the browsing and downloading when away from home.
many times, in fact, she wont even use the kindle to do the purchase, she will use her computer at home to browse and buy, since it is MUCH easier and faster than on the kindle itself. then she will pick up the kindle and sync it up after the purchase. works great.
warning: the Kindle can and does have various Bibles available. but remember that the kindle is meant for reading. it is not a computer that can search for references or words, etc. some bible books will allow that, but they are reallllly slow. if you need an e-bible and need something bigger than a smart phone, then the kindle is not a good choice for that kind of thing. but that for another topic/thread.
the kindle books are proprietary and has copy protection on them if you have or desire a huge book collection, I understand that the kindles library management is really cumbersome to maintain and try to synchronize - the only options there because of the copy protection on the books is that there are several hacks that can help with the library management.
depending, again, on how much you want to organize, maintain and synchronize your books. if you get a second one, as example, they are registered separately and you can't (easily) get your already purchased books on the second device. so unlike paper books that you own, and that you can let your husband read a book while you read another - can't be done (without hacking) on the kindle. though obviously you could share the same device, just not read at the same time.
there is a new color e-ink technology that is going to be more readily available soon, and I am guessing that the kindle may incorporate this by Christmas time or early next year. another part of the tech that is happening is the real-book-style, two page display. this may not catch on at first, but will probably happen soon and when that goes to color e-ink, the next tech that is already available, though not readily and really expensive is the flexible substrate. something that can be "rolled" up, as example, and still have the e-ink type display (as opposed to the LED/LCD type that is also being developed, but that for another topic/thread).
anyway, my suggestion is to get the cheaper one and get a good book-light, if you read in bed/in the dark at all. believe me, we have been through a handful of really cheep ones, and finally got a nice one with a base station/charger.

I don't know about Kindle's but my son who works at Barnes & Noble brought home a Nook for me to try out for a few days. I was amazed at how easy the reading was on my eyes. I couldn't put it down for 2 days. I'm still not convinced that I "need" to buy one but who knows!

i use my wife's kindle now and again and it very easy on the eyes, especially for long periods of time and especially when outside on the desk or at the pool. she does a lot of reading at night and needs the light.
