Techie question Part II

Postby Billy n NC » December 25th, 2010, 9:45 pm

Hello fellow techies.

I have a Dell Latitude D610 that has decided to, shall we say.. act out.

The Mouse pointer has a mind of its on.

It will all of a sudden stop working and floating diagonally up or down till it
goes off screen. If I try to take control its like tug a war. Leave it alone for a few min and you have control for a bit.

It has 1 gig of ram. and it is doing the same thing with fresh builds of Windows 2000 and XP PRO..

I have a wireless Logitech mouse plugged in. I tried a corded optical mouse and get the same thing.

This touch pad has the same response as the little joystick mouse control.

Is there a way to disable the onboard/builtin pointing devices.. its not in the bios setup that I can see.

As an added note have had a problem with it overheating but have purchased one of the cooling pads to resolve this. Several of the little rubber footies are missing.

Question do you have Speech Recognition? If so try to disable. Are just go into system config./startup and disable all, then reboot to add back and find out what app is casuing it.

Go to mouse in control and hardware select and disable

MS gives this to resolve; http://support.Micro$oft.com/kb/175400

"clear the Snap pointer to default button in dialog boxes check box"
Not sure if this is your case.

I found a website on how to dismantle the laptop and clean out the fan . I may try that tomorrow..

When it is hot the computer is sluggish and trying ti watch a video on hulu etc is awful. I get audio find but the video is choppy like a poor slide show instead of video..

found this site out tonite.

I may shop for a replacemente fan or maybe a salvage D610 on ebay.

WOW... It is absolutely Amazing.

I watched the video on how to take the laptop apart.

Absolutely Amazing what PLUGGING the cooling fan will Do.. LOL

Dont look at me I did not unplug the fan. This is the first time I opened the case up. But the little itty bitty plug was sitting beside the empty jack..

I took some compressed air and blew the fan out. Squirted some WD40 (which we got at Fathers Day this year). Plugged the fan and and it took a few seconds it started spinning. Closed it up and The computer has been on for about 45 min and no problems yet..

My laptop was overheating the past few days. I used a vacuum to stink the dust out. Not sure if that is a good way or not really.

Now there is more air coming out of the fan part and seems to running cooler now.

Yeah, It's amazing what you find in some computers ;) I had a friend give me a computer to fix and said it just stopped working, After troubleshooting I found that 'someone' had place the heatsink on backwards.

Billy is that one of ours? (sorry I haven't been on in awhile) let me know if it is, I'll have a talk to our techs that checked it. The Mouse may have been a software glitch (or I've seen them start doing that when they start going out and have to be replaced) but the fan is our mistake if it's one of ours.

Yep Bill, it was one that I got during the summer. I gave it to my wife and it got on her nerves lol Shutting down locking up etc. I purchased one of those cooling pads for laptops and the teenagers used it okay.. complained some but dealt with it..

but when Ms Betty got laid off from Belks week after Thanksgiving I had to start selling the laptops. And the one that was acting up became mine.. LOL I guess that is what prompted me to say.. Well its not there imagination..

So that is when I started this post.. I found the unplugged fan and plugged it up. it spun up but was slow gave it some wd40 and it appeared to be operational.. But it still would act up after a while.

I went on Ebay and purchased a replacement fan. Got the fan in and installed it would not work. tore it apart and gave it wd40 and Nada..

contacted the Ebay seller about a refund and he gave me a big hint. Fan will not work (spin) while on battery only until it is very warm.. duhh all the work and testing was just on the battery.. I plugged in the AC adapter and the new fan worked great..

Have not had any more issues yet..

I see you guys posted half a dozen more of the 620 s this past week. but my operating slush fund is in the RED.. :)

but on the good side now. I am not afraid to tear into a laptop now.. I can take a d610 down to mother board in about 5 mins...

so

My wife starts surfing and writing it is shutting off..

Is there a Toshiba utility that will tell me if its overheating etc b4 I go tearing it apart..

check the BIOS CMOS settings. ther emay be an overheat sensor selection. also, once pictures are cached, the hard drive may not be running, so a slideshow wouldn't use as much power and cause entropy/heat dissapation.

I think you mean a Dell Utility, and yes there is it's called Dell Diag, and should be on the disks you got with the laptop, or installed so that you can boot into it from the BIOS

Hold the Fn-key as you press the power button; this will load Dell Diagnostics. But Here's what I use and it's free also it's a standalone that don't need to be install. It has an sensor that will tell you your hdd temp and if your motherboard has a sensor it will also give it's temp.

I would also check the battery and power adapter and I have also ran into bad ram that caused this issue. Check the memory with memtest. http://www.memtest.org/

Thanks Bill and Beck,

Ran all the diags test mem okay and everything else

Passed all test.

I am going to do a complete system Recovery with the Dell CD.

Here is what is happening.

Randomly. Screen goes Black. NO warning. Power button is solid on and fan is still running.

I have Hibernation turned off. In the standby mode the power on light blinks slowly.. but this the power light stays solid..

I have to press the Power Button for 3-4 seconds and light and fan shuts off. Press the power button and laptop comes back on going thru normal boot process. Another observation Windows does not give the error message that it is recovering from an abnormal shutdown either..

Recovery time..

Hey Bill shoot me a message with your phone number again. Got another subject to discuss..
