What do you consider Basic ? And is it the same for all religious groups or does it vary according to doctrinal positions?
You cannot effectively love and minister to others when you are obsessed with protecting
and preserving yourself.

Basics

Postby Pastor Gary » January 27th, 2011, 1:36 am

In context, we have a lot of new people who seem to be needing more understanding of the essential, foundational doctrines such as salvation, what it means to follow Jesus, etc. We are doing 5 weeks on Romans 12 as a passage that defines true discipleship.
"God is excited to show you mercy. He rises to give you His compassion." (Isaiah 30:18)

"For surely, O LORD, you bless the righteous;
you surround them with your favor as with a shield." (Psalm 5:12)

I understand. Recently the Lord has began to deal with me concerning the statement of Back to the basic. Your use of the term is more back to the foundatons or redigging the well of Abraham. Which I am in agreement with.
To often when I hear Back to the basic...it refers to back to the doctronal and polity of a particular organization or movement.

As I look to the very core foundation of Christianity I am constantly drawn more and more to the followingm, it has become my square1.

Rom 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
Rom 5:11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.
Rom 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
Rom 5:13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
Rom 5:14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.
Rom 5:15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
Rom 5:16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.
Rom 5:17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

Rom 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Rom 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Rom 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
Rom 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Rom 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
Rom 6:8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
Rom 6:9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
Rom 6:10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
Rom 6:11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
You cannot effectively love and minister to others when you are obsessed with protecting

and preserving yourself.

Not to beat something silly, but you'd mentioned Francis Chan's influence on you, PG. I'm curious whether your Back to Basics series ties into Chan's Basic video series in any way. Is that something you all are doing at all (Chan videos, that is)?

And on that subject -- has anyone else watched any or all of that series??
Human government bears the same relation to hell as the church bears to heaven. (David Lipscomb, On Civil Government, 72).

I saw the Chan videos several years ago, and have shown the "Think About It" one at church... Where he is walking withe the surfboard. It was nit a direct influence, but Chan (among others) has certainly influenced me.
