Isaiah 53

Postby beckrl » August 30th, 2011, 2:36 pm

When considering the context of chapters 41,43,44,45 & 49 of Isaiah I noticed that 'my servant' was Jacob O Israel. Why then do most christian scholars claim that Isaiah 53 is concerning Jesus as the servant?

Isaiah 44:1Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen:

Isaiah 52:1313Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.

In which in the continuation of the context of my servant by Isaiah referring to the servant as 'He'. This continues into chapter 53 with the description of the suffering servant.

Could you point me to where thoses quotes are of Isaiah 53 in the New Testament?

Edit: I found them, thanks. So thinking out loud here, On one hand it's my servant Israel and on the other it's said to be fulfilled by Jesus. I just wonder how that should work, maybe in an typology way?

beckrl, here is a couple of examples:

Isa 53:9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
1Pe 2:22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:

Isa 53:12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Mr 15:28 And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.

Thanks again, I found that Matthew has a number of 'quotes from Isaiah' that relates to Jesus as being fulfilled. As while as Mark and Luke.

What I was wondering since Isaiah in earlier chapters denoted that the servant was Jacob O Israel would that be a 'type' of how Jesus was to be the 'Real' fulfillment of the suffering servant. It really seems to be the case as I see it. What's your thoughts?

beckrl, as I think that you all ready know that from Genesis to the time that Christ was taken up is all fulfilment of scriptures. If one wanted to take it farther then we can look to the Church and her preparation for His soon coming and her being ready will be the fulfilment of scriptures.

What I was thinking was that in the book of Isaiah there are many places that Isaiah writes of a 'type' of something or someone and then later that becomes fulfilled as the 'Real' as in this case as the suffering servant.

For instances the child born of a virgin which is called Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14) Ahaz would be given a sign of God's deliverance even when Ahaz was still in disbelief. The 'sign' was a child born of a young woman and it so happen to be the son of Isaiah. (Isaiah 8:3)

This was a 'sign' to Ahaz, but also a type and shadow of the true deliverer which was not Isaiah's son, but the son of Mary and Joseph.

Isaiah would also use types of the Messiah [anointed one]. One case would be the king Cyrus of Persia as God's anointed (Isaiah 45:1) who's right hand God hold or strenghted to subdue nations and he was the one to give the decree to the Israelites to return to their homeland. (Isaiah 44:26-28)

So hopefullly we can see that Isaiah used these types to tell of who was to come that of course would be our Lord Jesus.

Becklr I have to disagree with you on this one because they don't fit. Types and Shadows have to fit. Remember that there is a lot of differents between a "virgin" and a "young woman".

Here is what the ATSD HAD TO SAY ABOUT THIS:

American Tract Society Dictionary
MAHER-SHALAL-HASH-BAZ
Haste, spoil, speed to the prey, the name given by Isaiah to one of his sons, for a prophetic intimation of the speedy victory of the Assyrians over Syria and Israel, Isa 8:1-3.

"John Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible
Isa 8:8
And he shall pass through Judah,… That is, the king of Assyria, compared to a river of mighty waters; who should not only run over and possess the land of Israel, or the ten tribes, but should enter into Judea, and pass through it, as a chastisement for not trusting in the Lord, "

Sounds bad for Judah, but when one read farther into the book they will find God's deliverance.
Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary
Maher-shalal-hash-baz
making speed to the spoil; he hastens to the prey

Lot of difference from "making speed" and "God with us"

There is no denying that 'in the days of Ahaz' is when this 'sign' of a virgin [young woman] was to be. So I'm confused why you disagree.

Becklr, One was a pledge to the King Ahaz of God,s speed.
Isa 8:3
And I went unto the prophetess; and she conceived, and bare a son. Then said the LORD to me, Call his name Mahershalalhashbaz.

Isa 7:14
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel

American Tract Society Dictionary
EMMANUEL
A compound Hebrew word or name, signifying God with us. It is applied to the Messiah, our Savior, who, as having united the divine with the human nature, and having come to dwell with men, is God with us, Isa 7:14; 8:8; Mt 1:23.

Two difference sons for two different reasons. One was a pledge to God delivery of Judah from Assyrians

The other was God God's promise to the world.

Mt 1:21
And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
Mt 1:22
Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
Mt 1:23
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Yes, I totally agree, so I'm still not sure why you would disagree with me. I see the son of Isaiah as a type since the son was only a 'sign' to Ahaz. Hints the type and shadow as Isaiah had given multible times.
