Okay, here's an update with more prayer requested.
On Thursday morning, we got information of an available subsidized apartment that would house these folks. I went to the office, got the paperwork (they have no transportation, I wasn't going to put momma in my car alone with me, I'm still kinda squishy on the daddy and what he is or isn't doing, and so I just went and did it myself). I talked to the manager, got all the ID requirements. I went to the family's hotel room (and by room I mean hole) and filled out their paperwork with them. All 6 of the kids are there, too. Extremely well behaved, and especially under their circumstances.
I returned the paperwork with her ID, both of their SS cards and both birth certificates. Apt. needs HIS ID. He has no DL, nor does she (she's never had one, he's got old unpaid tickets). Also had to have criminal history check from police department. I also paid for one more night in the fleabag joint.
Meanwhile, my wife's brother, who is not a Christian and who found this family initially, raised a couple of hundred dollars at his workplace. Our pastor went to a local extended stay hotel -- a clean one -- and secured a week's stay for them there. On Friday, my sister in law, Linda, and her husband, Wayne, got in the church van, drove over to the hotel and picked up the whole gang, put them and their belongings in the van, drove them to the courthouse, helped him get a new non-driver state-issued ID, drove them over to city hall to submit their authorizations for criminal background checks (both clean on convictions for non-traffic cases), and took them back to the apartment complex to submit the background checks and his ID. We should know something on Tuesday.
Pray for the approval for them to get the apartment. Our church is going to cover the deposit and utilities and, if any, first month's rent. We've also got everybody on standby for furniture and bedding donations.
After they left the complex, my sis-in-law and her hubby drove the family back to the new hotel. We picked them up in the van again Friday evening for Radical U and they came on Sunday morning again to church.
My wife's brother has come to church 2 Sundays in a row. (He was also at Radical U on Fri night.) He hasn't been to church in years. He talks as if he'll continue to come. We'll see. Pray for that, too. They have a family situation that has arisen right about now, too, and they are desperate for a specific outcome to occur. I don't know that it'll happen as they want, but God is bigger than the situation (and, I'm pitching in on that issue, too, professionally). So, they are both seeking God for their own deeply felt need (and, one they happen to be right about) and touched by this other family's need. My wife's brother said, "Well, after this, I guess I don't have much to complain about. At least for a couple of months!"
This has been, as my pastor put it, "one of the craziest things I've ever seen God do to get somebody back in church". And, it has been an amazing two weeks. I told Jay (my wife's brother) a week ago, "I hate that this family is in this situation, but I'm glad you found them and this is the most fun I've had in a long time." If that's perverted, just tell me, but that's the way I feel about it.
So, in summary:
1. Pray for housing, work and furnishing/clothing, enrollment in school -- and above all -- salvation for this family. The parents need to commit to Christ and they are not married (and I've gotten conflicting information about him being the dad of the oldest 3 or not....I think he may be but I'm uncertain); he is the father of the youngest 3. The children are sweet as can be. The whole bunch of them are poor and ignorant and need help.
2. Pray for my wife's brother and his wife to be saved, and for their situation in their family to be resolved quickly and amicably for the sake of their grandchildren, and for their immediate and long term best interests.
Whew.
God is good for even shedding the hope of Himself into these dark situations. Pray for these people, please.
