Imagine with me: You have a minor traffic violation in municipal court. You admit your guilt. You get SENTENCED to time for it (very minor infraction) and appeal to the local county court for jury trial. Your new lawyer goes to bat for you and gets your case provisionally dismissed if you pay the court costs AND you don't have to pay the fine originally ordered. Then, you break down in a heap of tears as if you'd been sentenced to life in prison and you leave the courtroom in a run unable to contain the emotion of this "tragedy".
Or, imagine this. You have a prior felony record. You are charged with a crime that, if you're convicted (and chances are almost 100% you will be) you are looking at a minimum sentence of 99 years. Your lawyer goes to bat for you. Your victim then becomes soft-hearted and goes to bat for you after many discussions with said lawyer. The DA becomes soft-hearted after hearing from said victim. New offer: You can get out of jail TOMORROW if you'll plead guilty on a lesser charge. You then say, "F 'em. I want a trial." "I know it means I might spend the rest of my life in prison. I think she's full of ______." [Hint: She's not.]
I can't wait to see what tomorrow's day in the rabbit hole brings.
