Mad and outrage aren't words I would use.
Ashamed is.
I am ashamed that I used to think that politicians and law and government could actually be constructive forces for good. I am ashamed that I did not see from the outset of my belief in Christ that no government can ever be truly good or do actual good as instruments of depraved men.
I am ashamed that I did not say and do more in speaking the truth to the church, or praying that God would raise up someone who would, about the sanctity of marriage and the American church's hypocrisy on pro-life advocacy while smiling and clapping and hugging and all but endorsing the institution of marriage within which is the only truth-affirming context for reproductive life. I am ashamed that we have allowed ourselves who say we believe Jesus is King to act as if men are.
I am ashamed that, by now, the real energy of the church is going to be spent on futile armchair QBing the politics of marriage and still remain mute on accountability within churches when divorce happens. I am ashamed that there is not one iota of indication that real repentance is going to happen. I am ashamed that we will probably be complicit in the abandonment of marriage, even the effective forbidding of it in this new realm of anybody-can-be-united-now.
No, I am not mad. I am mortified.
Human government bears the same relation to hell as the church bears to heaven. (David Lipscomb, On Civil Government, 72).
