Sunday School

Postby Ilovebigcats » September 29th, 2004, 12:44 pm

My 9 year old has always wanted a "ship" theme SS class. Well she gets the chance to have that now. So her class is gonna be decorated shippy. I would like it to look like you're in a ship and looking out over the water when you enter the class. Since the abreviation for Sunday School is SS and most ships are SS Something it works out even cooler. We can't decide between:
SS Mercy
SS Grace (new baby's name, might be weird)
SS Salvation (too many s's? Ses? S'? sssssss?)
SS Resurrection
SS Life
SS Zion

Our saying....
Our Helm - The Word
Our Governor - Jesus
Wind in our Sails - The Holy Ghost

I can't figure out how to do the bottom of the walls like a wooden ship (cheaply as possible). Actual wood or paper or paint? I thought wood would be cool and let each child that comes through the class carve their name in the boat. But I couldn't think how and what would look good and not just like a shoty mess thrown in there. I can paint above the ship area a sea and a lighthouse in the distance and a light sky color above. I would like a table in the center of the room with a pole coming out of the middle of the table and going to the ceiling with a sail hung from the poll and attached to the upper corner of the room. However I'd like a helm with the Bible on it. Is it okay to have a sail and a helm? dunno? What about lighting? The light in the center of the room will be in the way of the pole. Any thoughts? I have an electrician for a husband and he can do anything. Any other ideas? Help me think of stuff. Help us decide the name, which do you like best? I'll add a poll... Any shippy ideas welcome! Like, I wanna add a net somewhere with fish caught in it. We could write names on them of friends we want to "catch" to pray over every class. I would like enough sailor hats to put on the kids when they come to class each time. Personalized of course to prevent "bug passing". Help me! 8)

Does the ship have to have an overtly "spiritual" name?

S.S. Adventure
S.S. Explorer
S.S. Enterprise --- no wait, that's been done.
"God is excited to show you mercy. He rises to give you His compassion." (Isaiah 30:18)

"For surely, O LORD, you bless the righteous;
you surround them with your favor as with a shield." (Psalm 5:12)

A good place to look for sailor hats and other possible decorations (cheap) is oriental trading. www.orientaltrading.com They have lots of ideas that might help. And you can order over the net or over the phone and have the supplies in about a week. Their sailor hats are really reasonable.

I love good animated movies, and "Finding Nemo" was an absolute HOOT in my opinion.

I think Sunday School should be just as much fun, as well as a learning adventure for children and adults...

What about a "Good Ship Nemo" theme?

Just an idea....

Of course, one can tell that I don't have small children too...

You could put a Titanic theme to it. Your ship will not hit any icebergs with God steering it.

Should I paint you other "ships" in the horizon on the wall? Each with their own flag?

BTW No one told me if it's okay to have a helm and a sail??? Anyone know? Also what are some "titles" of ship workers... like "first-mate"? I would like to make Classroom Appointments along these lines.....

I think I am leaning towards SS Explorer now. We will all be Sunday School Explorer's and Explore God's Word.

Yeoman
Skipper
Captain
First Mate
Admiral

Just to name a few titles....

And be as creative as the Lord inspires you to be...make Sunday School a "not-to-be-missed" event for those who attend.....or those who will always want to attend...

Or you could make a Navy theme and title it something like

USS Jesus Rules Because He Lives In My Heart

and then make alphabet soup out of it, like the military does and old-school COGOP used to do.

USS JRBHLIMH

That would be awesome.
