COGOP Questions: Arise, Shine

Postby Gerald Creasy » June 7th, 2006, 5:40 am

Isa 60:1 Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.

In this passage you see the prophecy foretelling the reemergence of the Church of God in the early 20th century.

Gerald, I know what you are speaking of, so I can easily say I disagree with what you are considering the "traditional" view of this, but honestly that view is so foreign to someone like me who was not raised in the CoGoP, that you might want to clarify a little more your question. (or at least add a "I don't know what the traditional view is" as an option)

If you voted "I agree" to this post then you are an idiot, hands down, completely off your rocker.

The people in this passage being told to "Arise & Shine" are those of the city of the Lord (see verse 14) - Jerusalem. The Light Isaiah refers to is the Lord. David also calls God a "light"in Psalms 36:9.
However, Holy scripture can have multiple impressions and thus, this one can be our reminder to reflect the Light like Jerusalem is being told to do.
I disagreed in vote though, because I do not think this passage was a prophecy from Isaiah to American Christians in the 20th century.

COGOP questions.........arise and shine

Postby Dr. Ron » June 9th, 2006, 6:37 am

Good post Joey.

The major problem with all these questions that have been put forth is that the church went through a long period of having preachers who preached "types and shadows". L.S. Rhodes was the one who came up with the idea and the majority of the plans for FOTW. Every bit of it came out of this type of preaching.

The problem with T&S preaching is it is entirely speculative. We can take almost any OT scripture and make it what we want by using T&S. Does anyone remember a little mexican guy named Felix Garcia? He was the greatest proponent of "MY dove my undefiled is but one" preaching. He could do it better than anyone. And the building filled to capacity when he did. Why? Because WE WANTED to be exclusive. People love that. Why do you think there is a Super Bowl? All of us want to be #1!!!!!! It is no different for " semi-illerate back woods hicks" as Gerald is fond of saying.

Those who bought into the T&S are still trying to make it work. That is why COGOP has had split after split. And they will continue until all of that is resolved and a real vision and direction have been established.

It takes a long time to turn a big ship around.........and you can't do it at all in a creek. The water has to be deep.

Paul applied that passage as follows:

Eph. 5:8-14
" you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said:
'Wake up, O sleeper,
rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you'."

Quoting Isa. 60:1
Human government bears the same relation to hell as the church bears to heaven. (David Lipscomb, On Civil Government, 72).

I have no problem seeing a dual prophetic analogy to the church in this prophetic declaration to Israel. After all the church is the "heavenly Jerusalem" the "Mt. Sion" of the New Covenant. And indeed we should "let our lights so shine before men." Amen? I do believe in the brightness of the Arise Shine and the underlying intent of COG preaching towards that end -- though I do have some reservation as to whether there is any connection to the Wright Brothers in this passage -- which leaves the application of it as strictly applying to June 13, 1903 subjective (IMO).
