PKs...Good or Bad?

Postby ImaPK » June 22nd, 2006, 4:53 am

I know we've visited this topic before, but we've gotten alot of new members since and thought we might visit it again to get some new thoughts and see some old ones  ...we've all heard the old saying that "Preacher's kids are the worst." but is this true?...if you think it is, why do you think this way?...if you disagree, why is that?...now I know we have several PKs on J2 and I know we have several Preachers on J2 and I know we have several PKs who grew up to be Preachers  (and some who didn't  )...vote in the poll and give your thoughts.

According to a PK I have known for over 30 years, PKs come in two flavors; devilsfood and angelsfood, and there is no in between. They are either sinners racing for the gate of Hell, or saints that make God weep tears of joy.
Why is it that bad decisions seem to make to most interesting testimonies?

WOW! definitely must disagree with this statement. Seems to leave out the majority of PK's I've known. Including my three sons. My sons now range from ages 33-38 and we have spent many hours talking, and sharing about their upbringing. they were raise for the most part in COGOP. With all the Old traditions (Good and bad). They were not angels but they were not devils. They were young boys trying to live under the expectations of others. Some times they did sometimes they did not. They were young boys trying to find their own unique gifting. One did early on the others much later.

As we have talked over the years, the one ting that has always come up from my boys, Thank you dad for the values you instilled in us, it helped us to never cross some lines that other did. Most are not angels, nor or they devils. Just kids trying to make it like all of us except with some added pressure.

I think both of you are correct but for different reasons...as a 40+ years PK this is what I've seen...people who "know"(know some but little interaction) see PKs as either good or bad based on two things, what they've seen and what they've heard(MV's statement)...the others are those who KNOW PKs and know that PKs can and do grow and mature(paul's statement)
The "two flavors" is a good analogy for those who really don't KNOW PKs...paul there are those in California, even today, that if you say my name, they will gladly tell you how "bad" I was when I was a kid and because I have not seen them in years would still believe that about me(devilsfood)...yet there are those here in Tennessee and other places who never saw that side of me and would say I'm an alright guy(angelsfood)...AND there are those in California that have kept up with my life that would disagree with those that say I am "bad" and have grown and matured into a "good" PK.

not really, but my great grandfather anscstor that brought us here from Austria was. He couldn't/didn't do it in his church, but was a soap box corner preacherand preached that Hitler was the antiChrist and that the world was comming to an end. :) (no, really! There is some documentation that one of Hitlers "people" had apprently put a hit/mark out on him for this and when he discovered it, he packed up the famaily and fled to the melting pot.)

In any case, I know some OK's personally, dated some gals after high school and know some now. One family in particular, I have full confidence that all teh kids are saved, though a couple are not "church-goin' folk", and one is very faithful to his church, but has a difficult time sometimes because he does not feel "called" to be a pastor like dad, but he is called to be in teh ministry as far as many other aspects in teh Church.
Thanks, Brent "RamboPreacher" Hoefling

ImaPK,

I know you, and I would not consider you either "anglefood" nor "devilsfood." Your more of a marble cake - you know - all mixed up.

I married one, so I think they're okie-dokie! They get their own unique set of luggage for life, though, that's for sure. My hat's off to all the PK's, "good" or "bad".

ImA is more like sourdough bread...can't tell if he's suppose to be soft or hard.
I lived with ImA and I know how it is. Unfortunately or fortunately, however you look at it, I had a different environment than he did. He was out of the house by the time I was 9. I grew up in the home of a general appointee and state overseer. That is much more different than what he saw. Unfortunately, I, like many others I know, got a little arrogant thinking I was someone important simply because of who my dad was. I have luckily grown out of that. I rode on my dad's coat-tails. I found out as I grew up that nobody really cared who my dad was. It was ME that they liked or disliked. I also had pressure that many kids never experience. Like living in a glass house. Everyone watching your every move waiting for you to slip up so they could complain about you and your parents...as if we were suppose to be perfect. I was told how to act, what to wear, where I could and could not go, how to comb my hair (I wish I had enough hair to comb now), who I could and couldn't hang out with. It was more than the usual pressure of an average kid. It's a wonder I didn't turn to the "dark side."
I love my parents and would not trade my upbringing for anything. But, I sure wish I could go back and rebel a little more. Then I might not be so bitter and jealous now. But, I'll live.
God does not need me...but He wants me.

As a PK growing up in the country, I found out later on that everytime me or sibs were out doing anything, people would call my parents and tell what we doing and where we were. Which explains why they always knew when we had been up to no good.

I think you may have a point there Mike, I'm a PK but I went from devilsfood to angelsfood over the years. Most, if not all the one's I know are either or. O:)

PKs...Good or Bad?

Postby Brenda » June 22nd, 2006, 5:49 pm

I'd say neither.

They are just kids. Kids like anyone else's.

They need to be lifted up, encouraged and prayed for just like anyone else's kid.
Don't expect anything more from them then sister so and so's kid. Just love them.

While I don't think the PK's are either good or bad, unfortunately their actions get alot more gossip (prayer requests) than the rest of the kids in the congregation.
Let the wild rumpus start!
