I hope this turns out to be a good game. I was doubtful until we played pretty decent against LSU.
ROLL TIDE ROLL
The LSU game only convinced me that we still know how to lose a game. I came into this season thinking we'd be 4-5 loss team. So, I'm not disapppointed in terms of expectations at the outset of this season. I knew that we'd lost our best experienced players, and that this year would be a youth movement.
What I didn't expect is what has chilled me on Shula. I didn't expect Alabama to lead the conference in trips into the red zone. I didn't expect Alabama to so miserably fail to convert on those trips. I didn't expect Ken Darby to be as unproductive as he's been; I didn't expect Jimmy Johns to be the bolt of lightning that he's become, but who sits on the bench watching Darby either fold at the line of scrimmage or slip and fall. I didn't expect us to run the same plays against UT at their one yard line going into halftime that they turned around and ran from their own 10 after we failed to score. I didn't expect us to miss 4 field goal attempts against a very good Arkansas team, any one of which, if made, would've won the game. All of that, except poor Lee Tiffin, is on Mike Shula. He has the most ineffective game plan of any coach with similar talent in the country. I believe if Mike Richt had our guys on his UGA team this year, they'd actually have a better record than they do right now, except I'm not sure that would've gotten them a victory against Auburn, which they now have (the whole Auburn-Georgia dynamic is a thing unto itself; people in Opelika genuflect when you mention Georgia -- it's crazy).
I didn't even watch the LSU game. The score said all it needed to: we scored two touchdowns against a good team, but we got beat by 2 touchdowns. Both of those are completely unacceptable anymore. We lost every single game that we needed to win in order to be a presence in the SEC. That's a sad state of affairs to even need to say "be a presence in the SEC" when you are Alabama. And we lost to (gulp) Mississippi State. Missisippi State -- the laughingstock of the SEC. They make Kentucky look like USC. But they beat us. Now, that is abysmal. No matter what happens tomorrow, nothing is going to change. Shula will remain, and so will his inept offensive staff. Next year, and I mean this with all my soul, there's not a reason in the world, talent and experience wise, why Alabama shouldn't be the runaway favorite for the SEC West. But, we won't be. And, we won't win it, especially if Shula remains. Enough is enough.
As for Lee Corso, I'll give you the short version. My wife called him after the end of the Alabama-Tennessee game last year to rag him for picking UT (as you'll recall, we won 9-6). She actually got through to his voicemail at ESPN, believe it or not. She left him a message, and he returned the call about 2 weeks or so later. We were sitting at the supper table and the phone rang, I reached over and looked at the caller ID. It had the name of a company with an Orlando area code. I answered, and he said, "This is Lee Corso, is Lesley Shelton there?" I just laughed and said, "Sure, coach, here she is." I handed the phone to my wife and kept eating. It was him. They've exchanged calls on several occasions since. This time, he called her for her "input" on the Iron Bowl. Go figure.
