Advent
Anyone's family or church doing anything for Advent?
For the truth that lies at the heart of theology is not something there to be discovered, but something, or rather someone, to whom we must surrender. The mystery of faith is not ultimately something that invites our questioning, but something that questions us.

We found it to be a much more concrete way of "putting Christ in Christmas" than complaining about people not saying "Merry Christmas" or boycotting stores holding "Holiday Blowout Sales" instead of godly "Christmas Blowout Sales".
A couple of years ago, we started reading an EXCELLENT book by Arnold Ytreeide called Jotham's Journey. It is actually the first book in a trilogy which includes Bartholomew's Passage and Tabitha's Travels.
The books are family read alouds, and are very well written. We have kids from 15 down to 6 and they all LOVED them as well as my wife and I. The whole family laughs, cries and cringes together, and every night, the kids don't want to stop reading. We do the candles and all, too.
The stories are like historical fiction which tells the stories of the main characters and how they intertwine with the baby Jesus and each other...all though you don't know that in the first book....
It is SO cool to hear the kids exclaim, "I remember him from Jotham's Journey!" when they discover that Jotham's friend Bartholomew is the main character in the second book, and once thought dead characters are actually found to be alive in following books. They draw you in, and give good information on what life must have been like in Bible times.
I can't recommend these books highly enough. If you have a family, they are a MUST! They actually went out of print for a while, but I think are coming back. Some of the Amazon prices are high on later books, but I would say if you search, you can find them for a good price.
